摘要: The cultural status ofscientists in contemporary American society is both elite and insecure. Although science commands authority as the source of knowledge about "nature," individual scientists must struggle to achieve maintain "credibility." This ethnographic study examines strategies ofparticipants a public dispute over nuclear waste disposal they negotiated credibility ofcompeting scientists. I advance theoretical concept identity show how domain at once culturally-structured contextually-variable phenomenon.
