A high proportion this region also use hormonal contraception especially injectable depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). In The Lancet Infectious Diseases Renee Heffron and colleagues from study nearly 3800 HIV-1 serodiscordant couples seven African countries that using primarily DMPA had two-times acquiring HIV.
