Hormonal contraception and HIV: an unanswered question

摘要: Most of the 16 million women currently living with HIV are in sub-Saharan Africa where 60% infections occur women. A high proportion this region also use hormonal contraception especially injectable depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). Since first report increased acquisition taking oral contraceptives whether increases risk remains a crucial unanswered question. In The Lancet Infectious Diseases Renee Heffron and colleagues from study nearly 3800 HIV-1 serodiscordant couples seven African countries that using primarily DMPA had two-times acquiring HIV. Women who were HIV-infected at beginning twice as likely to transmit infection their uninfected male partners higher genital RNA concentrations potential mechanism for transmission.
