Hormonal contraception and HIV: an unanswered question

摘要: Most of the 16 million women currently living with HIV are in sub-Saharan Africa where 60% infections occur women. A high proportion this region also use hormonal contraception especially injectable depot-medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA). Since first report increased acquisition taking oral contraceptives whether increases risk remains a crucial unanswered question. In The Lancet Infectious Diseases Renee Heffron and colleagues from study nearly 3800 HIV-1 serodiscordant couples seven African countries that using primarily DMPA had two-times acquiring HIV. Women who were HIV-infected at beginning twice as likely to transmit infection their uninfected male partners higher genital RNA concentrations potential mechanism for transmission. This adds growing body observational evidence might increase womens transmitting (Excerpt)
