PRECISION DETERMINATION OF THE ENERGY OF THE GAMMA RAY OF POTASSIUM-40

摘要: The gamma ray of potassium-40 was compared with the 1368-kev line sodium-24 in a scintillation spectrometer. lines yttrium-88 were simultaneously recorded, and linear interpolation between these corrected to bring value into accord accepted standard value. A proportional correction applied interpolated for energy line. Sources consisted (i) mixed potassium bicarbonate, (ii) sodium activated by small neutron source. About seven kilograms bicarbonate used each case; obtain sufficient activity (i), simulate approximately small= angle Compton scattering substance equal density (ii). Fullenergy peaks pulse-height spectra fitted normal distribution an iterative method least squares. With about 100,000 counts peak, determinations reproducible 0.5 kev. is 1459.7 plus or minus 1.0 dependence result upon changes standards also given. (auth)
