Limits of cardiac compensation in anemic baboons

摘要: The risk of homologous blood may cause physicians to withhold red cell treatment after acute loss. We believe that in the euvolemic patient with anemia, heart is principal organ at risk. cardiac compensation extreme anemia unknown and purpose this report. Fourteen adult baboons were anesthetized, paralyzed, ventilated room air. Left atrial coronary sinus catheters inserted surgically. Experimental animals (n = 7) hemodiluted constant left pressure 5% human serum albumin. Control underwent similar volume exchanges fresh, cross-matched, cells resuspended albumin, also pressure. Six seven experimental survived until hematocrit levels 4%. Adequate was observed less than 10%. Increased flow, without increases O2 extraction ratio, mechanism used by healthy patent vessels.
