摘要: Benthic foraminifera, single-celled eukaryotes, constitute a significant part of the living community in low-oxygen or even oxygen-depleted marine environments. Although diversity is typically low and dominance high, selected species appears to thrive such “hostile” In this chapter, spatial distribution modern benthic inhabiting environments from eutrophic, hypoxic continental shelf settings deep ocean oxygen minimum zones (OMZs), discussed typical assemblage composition outlined. Furthermore, in-sediment distribution, foraminiferal microhabitat, summarized, focus given on encountered deeper anoxic sediment units. Finally, current laboratory experiments survival strategies including nitrate storage physiological role chloroplasts bacterial husbandry foraminifera are discussed. Recent advances our understanding N-cycle future directions ecology studies also addressed.
