摘要: Consumption of fresh tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) has been implicated as the cause several foodborne illness outbreaks in United States, most notably cases salmonellosis. How levels fecal indicator organisms (FIOs) water relate to counts these microorganisms on tomato fruit surface is unknown, although microbial quality standards exist for agricultural use. This study utilized four types FIOs currently and historically used (Enterobacteriaceae, total coliforms, Escherichia coli) monitor two ponds a groundwater source. The tested contained significantly lower all than sources (P < 0.05). Considerable variability bacterial was found over course season, perhaps explained by environmental variables, such temperature, pH, precipitation, air temperature (R(2) 0.13 0.27). We also monitored grape treated with overhead applications different 2009 2010 growing seasons. type source time year affected populations irrigation Despite up 5-log differences coliforms 3-log E. coli between sources, there little difference measured washes taken from fruits. lack association aforementioned present samples demonstrates difficulty developing reliable metrics needed testing ensure effectiveness food safety programs.
