摘要: BACKGROUND Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare neoplasms. Since their initial description as arising from the pleura, SFTs have been reported at a wide range of anatomic sites. To authors's knowledge, there no large series reporting both thoracic and extrathoracic nor any that analyze clinicopathologic correlates tumor behavior. METHODS Institutional soft tissue pathology databases were reviewed to identify patients. Pathologic material was by an experienced pathologist scored for presence histologically malignant component. Clinical information obtained medical records phone calls Statistical analysis performed using Student t test, Pearson chi-square log-rank test. RESULTS Seventy-nine patients with treated single institution over 18-year period identified. These arose in Thoracic had similar clinical pathologic features, although more likely be symptomatic on diagnosis. Seventy-five underwent surgical excision SFT our institution. Overall, low rate local recurrence metastasis after treatment. Extrathoracic increased risk small but statistically significant. There difference metastasis-free survival between SFTs. Positive margins component factors predicting worse recurrence-free survival. margins, size greater than 10 cm, predicted survival. CONCLUSIONS Solitary occur all Most fare well Closer surveillance is warranted those larger cm or Cancer 2002;94:1057–68. © 2002 American Society. DOI 10.1002/cncr.10328
