Food habits of the Japanese black bear in the headwaters of the Ohwi River

摘要: The food habits of the Japanese black bear, Selenarctos thibetanus, were studied by scat content analysis in headwaters Ohwi River Shizuoka Prefecture, central Japan. Fifty scats collected from May to December 1981 1984 low mountainous zone (about 1, 000_??_1, 600m altitude). contents classified into six categories: namely, seeds and fruits, leaves, branches wood fragments, other vegetable matter, insects, items. bear was omnivorous mainly depending on foods; it amounted 98.5% total dry weight contents. Seeds fruits detected summer through fall, buna (Fagus crenata) mizunara (Quercus mongolica) staples diet period before hibernation. Most leaves spring summer. Branches fragments all seasons. Other matters small both amount frequency. All animal matter consisted adult insects some importance during fall. nests Hymenoptera sp.
