摘要: Abstract Biological denitrification was investigated in an attached growth reactor system using several media, denitrifying cultures and natural gas (95% methane) as a carbon source. In order to establish baseline of operation, initial experiments were conducted with bed 2–3 mm sand methanol source methylotrophic culture then the compared various methane utilising cultures. Compared methanol, performance considerably lower. improve plastic medium (Etapak, surface area 200 m 2 /m 3 ) placed above (which increased for bacteria upper part bed), new methanotrophic mixed (NCIMB-code 11085) introduced system. This combination resulted 27% higher efficiency. Experiments continued by systematically varying operating conditions obtain highest replacing Etapak media different area, but keeping NCIMB unchanged. Other tested Pall-rings (surface 319 m ), IP-spacers 500 m granular activated (GAC-code: Norit PK 1–3). Best results obtained which, surprisingly, are designed use concrete industry rather than bacterial support medium. These produced nitrate removal efficiencies up 93% at 0.6 m/h or 55% 1.6 m/h water filtration rates. Run times 10 days more limiting headloss about 1.0 m,were usually achieved before “bumping” back-washing reduce headloss. Effluent turbidities generally below 1.0 NTU. Tests present GAC COD IP spacers also carried out. Results discussed operational achieved.
