The Political Economy of Provincial TV Stations in China

摘要: My master thesis aims to examine how a Chinese political economy context has shaped the media landscape in China, especially domain of provincial television. The key issues are: 1) what role private profit accumulation is for TV stations China; 2) Whom ownership China belongs to; 3) global capitalism influence today; 4) government regulation today. Theoretically, we follow framework developed by Wasko (1994), Meehan (2005), and Mosco (2009) relate western theories social context, referring range academic works focusing on (e.g. Bai, 2005; Zhao, 2008). Based case study Hunan satellite television (Hunan PSTV), results show that: advertising main contributor total income stations; are state-owned according party-state’s definition, but they have started gain some capitalistic characteristics as increasingly driven audience-rating revenue; party-state can support commercialization taking series reforms, at same time, it readily suppress development stations, issuing legal decrees.
