Evaluating Passages 1 and First Certificate Textbooks: A Discourse Perspective

摘要: Adopting the critical discourse analysis framework, in general, andFairclough’s (1989) text analysis, particular, current study aims atexamining 3 aspects of meaning, namely social relations, subject positions, andcontents conversation as well vocabulary and grammar parts Passages 1(an American textbook) First Certificate (a British to find out whetherthere would be any discernable differences between these 2 instructional textbooks.To evaluate textbooks, content was employed. The results revealed thatthe primary emphasis both ELT textbooks on cooperative learning.Additionally, relations were mostly equal, andconversations often took place a male female with equal statusand power. Regarding data showed that 1favored friends relation, whereas TV reporting dominant socialrelation Certificate. Besides, 1 focused uncontroversialissues, concentrated controversial market-orientedtopics more than 1. After all, tended represent thediscourse culture Western countries, which can exert specific ideologies onlanguage learners.
