"RISKY" BUSINESS: CULTURAL CONCEPTIONS OF HIV/AIDS IN INDONESIA

摘要: This research examines Indonesian cultural conceptions of HIV/AIDS, including perceptions "risk." Two years fieldwork allowed for an in-depth assessment three diverse and important populations in Jogjakarta, Indonesia: (1) female sex workers, (2) waria, Indonesia's third-gender, (3) university students. Surveys (N=413) interviews (N=60) were partnered with anthropological participant observation to form a more holistic understanding the impact efficacy available HIV/AIDS education programs. Results suggest that Western notions "risk" are utilized define, construct, fund programs throughout archipelago. These constructions often fail adequately consider relating HIV/AIDS.This dissertation problematizes "high-risk" groups, as well behaviors. An nuances local around HIV helps illustrate how incompatible realities. For instance, workers illuminates importance identity it applies perceived Islamic ideas polygyny create acceptable "non-risky" lesser wives.
