摘要: Background: Advanced laryngeal cancers presenting with upper airway obstruction are a common scenario in Sub-Saharan Africa, requiring operative intervention as priority. Objective: To assess outcome of total laryngectomy treatment option the surgical management advanced tertiary health institution northwestern Nigeria. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis laryngectomies for carried out by one surgeon from December 2000 to August 2009. Results: Out 30 patients histologically diagnosed cancer, 18 were treated Fourteen (77.8%) males, while 4 (22.2%) females, male-to-female ratio 3.5:1. The age range was 20-70 years mean 47years males 33.8 females. Total on T4 lesions (100%), preoperative tracheostomy (100%) an emergency measure relieve obstruction. Two female had safe vaginal deliveries after their surgeries. Although all referred radiotherapy, only 6 (33.3%) could afford postoperative 5-year survival rate 33.3%; others not cost radiotherapy treatment, which be at center about 5 hours drive away our center. Seven (38.9%) presented recurrent neck nodal disease, 3 (16.7%) carotid blow-out hemorrhage that fatal. Conclusion: remains important modality cancers, it affords patient opportunity longer when combined radiotherapy. It is superior 'radiotherapy only' or 'surgery nothing.
