摘要: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) was petitioned in 1997 to consider listing North- ern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis atricapillus) under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, west 100th meridian contiguous United States. In their 12-mo finding issued June 1998, FWS deter- mined that this population as threatened or endangered not warranted based decision on review existing habitat information. Because status goshawks western continues be contentious has been challenged, Raptor Research Foundation, Inc. Society jointly formed a committee information regarding goshawk 100 th meridian. requested to: (1) determine if there is evidence trend U.S., excluding Alaska; (2) nesting eastern represent distinctive, genetically unique populations; (3) evaluate for goshawk-habitat relations, including any association with large, mostly-unbroken tracts old growth mature forests. Based information, concluded: data are adequate assess meridian; analyses phylogeography have provided genetic differences among recognized (atricapillus, laingi) putative (apache) subspecies, distinctness atricapillus North America known; at present, assessing solely using distribution late-successional forests appropriate, current understanding although clearly use often select
