摘要: The type material of Mastodonsaurus is revised and its complicated taxonomic history resolved. genus was erected by Jaeger in 1828 without a species name, which added subsequently Holl (1829) who named the jaegeri. large tooth on based his chosen herein as lectotype species. A smaller second individual, represented piece an occiput, also Salamandroides giganteus and, owing to find complete skull, recognized 1833 same author belonging Masto- donsaurus. Therefore, (Jaeger, 1828) senior subjective synonym M. jaegeri Holl, 1829. precedence two generic names 1834 first reviser, von Alberti, favour Salamandroides, but all later authors, including Alberti himself, followed Jaeger, decided 1837 retain name Mastodonsaurus. established usage preserved formally (nomen pro- tectum). Batrachosaurus Fitzinger, 1837, Labyrinthodon Owen, 1841 are unjustified replacement Meyer, 1832, S. salamandroides junior homonyms synonyms jae- geri 1829, 1828), respectively. recent attempt replace universally used Capitosau- roidea Watson, 1919 unused newly elevated Mastodonsauroidea Lydekker, 1885 rejected.
