摘要: Total hip replacements have been used for over 30 years with considerable success. Approximately 50,000 joints are replaced each year in the UK, and world-wide that figure rises to approximately 800,000. Today most common type of prostheses implanted comprises a highly polished metallic femoral head which articulates against an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cup. In early 1960s Sir John Charnley pioneered low friction arthroplasty technique, introduction UHMWPE as bearing surface acetabulum has allowed total joint become commonplace operation it is today
