摘要: Embrittlement threatens the useful lifetime of books, maps, manuscripts, and works art on paper during storage, circulation, display in libraries, museums, archives. Past studies have traced much embrittlement to Bronsted-acidic conditions under which printing papers been made, especially period between mid 1800s about 1990. This article reviews measures that conservators collection managers taken reduce acidity books other paper-based materials, thereby decreasing rates acid-catalyzed hydrolysis changes leading embrittlement. Technical challenges include selection an alkaline additive, selecting implementing a way distribute this substance uniformly sheet bound volumes, avoiding excessively high pH conditions, minimizing rate loss physical properties such as resistance folding, any cause evident damage documents one is trying preserve. Developers achieved considerable progress, modern librarians researchers many procedures from choose starting point for further developments.
