摘要: Abstract Despite the clear evidence of active flank dynamics that is affecting eastern side Mount Etna, contribution tectonic processes has not been yet understood. So far, various models proposed to explain observed deformation have based on onshore structural data, coming from volcanic edifice. The Ionian offshore Etna only recently investigated using multichannel seismic profiles, and offers opportunity image features substrate unstable volcano. This aims at describing located profiles acquired during three surveys. appears be laterally confined by two guidelines, trending roughly E–W, north south deforming flank; northern guideline, in particular, takes surface expression a sharp fault (Pernicana Fault). Though often assumed these boundary structures continue as linear features, connected frontal thrust ramp, occurrence this simple system imaged. In fact, data show remarkable degree complexity Etna. Pernicana Fault, for instance, continuing feature; rather, expressed ENE–WSW folds very close coastline. It possible might affected before Fault was developed, less than 15 ka ago. southern guideline collapsing volcano poorly onshore, does up offshore; indicate Catania canyon, E–W-trending feature, reflect control. Seismic interpretation also shows high just edifice Whereas complex affects bulge, it limited internal deformation.
