摘要: This paper expands themigration-fertility linkage literature by examiningthe fertility impact of temporary migration inHubei, China. The central hypothesis is thattemporary affects migrants' fertilitythrough a detachment process: separation oftemporary actual residence from their de jure creates loophole in family planningadministration, weakening the social control overtheir fertility. analysis annualorder-specific births since 1979 suggests migrants exhibit significantly higherprobabilities having second birth thanpermanent and non-migrants once type ofresidence controlled for; rural-rural temporarymigrants have highest among all groupsexamined. results lend support to detachmenthypothesis while indicating strong anti-natalimpact urban residence. Rural-urban are not ones blame for increases inout-planning contemporary China, but theirfertility would been lower if there had nodetachment. Rural-rural areactually escapees one-child-per-familypolicy.
