Cancer fatalism among elderly Caucasians and African Americans.

摘要: PURPOSE: To determine the relationship between selected demographic factors (e.g., education, income, ethnicity, gender, age) and cancer fatalism. DESIGN: Descriptive study. SETTING: Randomly senior citizen centers in a southern state. SAMPLE: The majority of participants (N = 192) were female African Americans. Mean age was 76 years, mean years education < or 8 income below $6,500 per year. METHODS: Demographic data collected Powe Fatalism Inventory completed face-to-face interviews. MAIN RESEARCH VARIABLES: Education, age, FINDINGS: Significant negative correlations fatalism found. also existed ethnicity gender. Age not significant predictor CONCLUSIONS: As participants' level decreased, scores increased. Americans females had higher scores. gender could be used to predict IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Future research should evaluate early detection practices.
