Two schools analysis exploring the impact upon politics (regime types, institutions, coalitions, policies) may be distinguished: those which stress economy, and political-military rivalry, or war. Among former are such arguments as: late industrialization (associated with Gershenkron); dependencia core-periphery (Wallerstein); liberal development model (much American writing in 50s 60s); transnational relation-modernization (Nye, Keohane, Morse); neo-mercantilists (Gilpin); state-centered Marxists (Schurmann). Arguments stressing role war include focus on organizational requirements providing security (Hintze, Anderson), special nature foreign relations (classical political theory), territorial compensation (diplomatic history), strains involvement (analysis revolutions). These provide basis for criticism much literature uses structure as explanation policy, particular (such strong-state weak-state distinction) tend, by excessive forms, to obscure connection between structures interests, politics. also permit notion recent fundamental discontinuity relations.
