摘要: The usage and cultural importance of wild weedy edible leaves relatives sesame, Ceratotheca Sesamum in Africa, is reported from herbarium records, published sources, firsthand observations. They contribute not only nutritionally—protein, lipid, micronutrients, especially calcium iron—but release a little scrutinized valuable product, water-soluble polysaccharide mucilage, that serves as source fiber provides beneficial dietary bulk, enhances gastrointestinal function, alleviates constipation, protects against diabetes, lowers cholesterol. Dissimilar genera species are used similar ways. Their utility was discovered by women gathering to accompany dry cereal staples. African vernacular names several disparate cultures refer their slimy consistency. Corresponding nutritional mucilage constituents other popular vegetables evaluated for comparison.
