摘要: This article traces the history of Mumboism, a millennial cult south-west Kenya, 1912–34. Mumbo, serpent god Lake Victoria, promised to eject whites and chiefs from region usher in period prosperity. Mumboism gained followers, it is argued, because mixed older ideas patron–client relations with newer omnipotent, unseen beings, introduced by Europeans as Government God. Mumbo challenged missionaries, struggling create patronage networks, attracting clients, threatened unmask God impotent. Chiefs and, lesser extent, missionaries directed state power repression eliminating before could undermine very basis European power.
