摘要: A survey of the topography, sediments, and faunas in northeastern Gulf Mexico has demonstrated presence a belt calcareous, reef-like features near edge continental shelf between 40-55 fathoms. The zone prominences is approximately one mile wide discontinuous with 10-20-mile gaps. average relief pinnacles 30 feet. detailed study been made 5-square-mile section this feature at south Mobile, Alabama. sedimentary faunal characteristics deposits form natural groupings that can be correlated submarine past present ecological conditions, history region. This reef intermediate stage active growth fossilization possesses some both stages. Past processes have tended to distribute modify sediments so as complex pattern indigenous, relict, reworked sedimentological area today. flourished under previous environmental conditions shallower, possibly warmer waters. It not survived rise sea-level now undergoing slow modification by aftergrowth self-burial. probability high will preserved geologic column. In characteristics, it resembles known ancient reefs.
