Situation or Social Problem: The Influence of Events on Media Coverage of Homelessness

摘要: Despite a strong interest in media coverage of social problems, sociologists have failed to examine when and why news outlets present issues as problems need public action within short time periods. Through content analysis 475 newspaper articles negative binomial regression, I show that homelessness varies the extent which it presents problem. The fact not all discusses challenges claim necessarily compete for attention zero-sum game. also effects three types events (events promoted by their actors high- low-profle actors) on newspapers' likelihood describing While previous researchers predicted would lead challenged status quo, fnd actor-promoted are much more likely do so. This fnding highlights importance institutionalized calling problems.
