Lending Growth and Cyclicality in Central and Eastern European Banks

摘要: This paper investigates determinants of lending growth and cyclicality in banks 15 Central Eastern European countries during the period 2004-2010. The results support, as expected, growth, but contrary to expectations, association between GDP is weaker when economy below trend than it above trend. result suggests existence strong supply-side pressures on initiated or amplified by large foreign-owned prior 2008 financial crisis. same developments may explain growth’s unexpected negative with bank size positive banking market concentration. Coefficients other macroeconomic bank-specific variables exhibit expected signs. However, bank’s equity level, credit risk have stronger above, foreign-ownership matters only
