摘要: A retrospective study was done in the in-patient department of paediatrics, BIRDEM from January 2002 to November 2006 determine clinico-laboratory features, precipitating factors and outcome diabetic ketoacidosis. Over five year period, 344 patients were hospitalized. Among them, 54 (15.6%) had ketoacidosis (DKA). those, 50 Type I, one Fibrocalculous Pancreatic Diabetes (FCPD) 3 other specific types. More than half (51.9%) newly diagnosed. Amongst factors, 28% missed insulin 48% overt infection. Infections, particularly those respiratory tract, main cause for DKA. There h/o both infection injections 11.5% patients. The mean age with DKA 11.2 ± 4.4 years. Those range 10-14 yrs suffered most frequently (p<0.0001) (n= 38, 70.4%) compared aged 0-4 (9%) 5-9 yrs. (20%). a significant difference between diagnosed (group I) known diabetics II) (p<.029). frequency higher girls boys (66.7% vs. 33.3%; p =.0001). median duration polyuria and/or polydipsia variable (3.2 - 25d) (p<.001). All presented altered levels consciousness 35 (67.3%) unconscious different grades. Mean random blood glucose (RBG) HbA1c 27.6mmol/L 13.4%. Complications noted acute renal failure (n=2, 3.7%) cerebral edema (n = 4, 7.5%). treatment whole group good, 46 (86.7%) recovered without complications, but 7 (13.4%) died. Ibrahim Med. Coll.
