Nepeta menthoides Boiss. & Buhse, an endemic species in Iran: A review of traditional uses, phytochemistry and pharmacology

摘要: Nepeta menthoides Boiss & Buhse is one of the endemic species in Iran. Named Ostokhodus, it almost used as substitute Lavandula stoechas –the original Ostokhodus- traditional Persian medicine (TPM) over time and widely for management some ailments such anxiety, depression, dementia chronic pain. The aim this study to review pharmacological phytochemical evidence on assessment recommended indications herb. In review, all relevant articles that met our inclusion criteria [English or articles, having full text, evaluating therapeutic effects N. dated mainly from year 1980 2018] were included by searching studies PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web Science, SID. search terms "Nepeta menthoides, "Ostokhodus". Triterpenes monoterpenes most chemicals reported essential oil menthoides. Several properties via vitro, vivo clinical have been including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive, antidepressant anxiolytic, anticholinesterase, neuroprotective, memory enhancing, anti-Alzheimer’s disease, anticancer effect opioid dependence. Some proposed herb TPM books are accordance with like anti-seizure, antidepressant, anxiolytic activity anti-infective properties. Although TPM, anti-tussive gastrotonic not supported scientific evidence, they need more investigations.
