摘要: A critical examination of an aquatic environment adjacent to the discharge from unbleached kraft pulp and paper mill (UBKM) was conducted in 1995. The assessment involved sampling sediments, water, benthic macroinvertebrates, fish collected 1.6 km upstream mill, at mill's outlet, 2.5 downstream. Field-collected blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochisus) exposed site sediments laboratory showed no significant within-organism adverse effects as measured by EROD activity, benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase CYP1A content, DNA damage, condition factor, organ indices, differential blood cell counts, histopathology, though strand breaks increased most downstream site. No aqueous or sediment toxicity observed using Ceriodapnia dubia Pimephales promelas Hyalella azteca Chironomus tentans, respectively. Embryos mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) were evaluated for reproductive potential following exposures adult river water 90 days. immediately below BKME Analyses field-collected macroinvertebrate samples revealed terms taxa, taxa richness, other measures their status. Using a comprehensive suite within-organism, whole-organism, community level endpoints, our study demonstrates that this effluent, discharged secondary treatment UBKM, had impacts on receiving ecosystem.
