Maintaining Competence in the Face of Resource Limitations: The Role of Schema Complexity in Aging and Communication

摘要: Research shows that older persons have generally lower levels of processing resources (e.g., working memory capacity, speed) and these limitations a negative impact on language production/comprehension in persons. On the other hand, practical communication competence either no age-related deficit or better performance than younger people. This chapter first reviews literature establishing deficits competence. It then examines how social knowledge may serve to counteract aging. In particular, research differences complexity age stereotype schemas is reviewed along with investigating production competent persuasive messages targets. The concludes discussion implications for research.
