The political economy of community management: a study of factors influencing sustainability in Malawi’s rural water supply sector

摘要: Sustainability is a major challenge in the rural water supply sector, where efforts to realise right clean are undermined by high levels of non-functionality. This thesis uses mixed methods test relative influence ten proximate determinants sustainability, and critically examine social, economic political dynamics underlying these – especially community management model, which places responsibility for point functionality on users. The study finds that key include both technical factors (e.g. type installation quality) availability funds incidence theft). These turn driven way structures interact with socially embedded institutions. Contrary claims made participatory approaches, frequently inefficient disempowering. Drawing concepts institutional bricolage civil society failure, analysis shows generates conflict reproduces inequality at level, embeds perverse incentives consolidates clientelism wider level.
