摘要: Background Aberrations in the physiologic components of normal oropharyngeal swallowing have been linked to aspiration events and predisposition pneumonia, a common, deadly disease elderly persons. Studies demonstrated temporal, link between breathing principal involved airway protection during swallowing. We developed normative model integrated patterns using concomitant videofluoroscopic images nasal respiratory airflow recordings. Objectives To establish temporal respiratory-phase pattern relationships adult human beings across aging continuum; relate any alterations these abnormality, an event swallowing, pneumonia; develop clinically practical evaluation methods for identifying discoordination. Setting Fluoroscopy suite acute care hospital. Participants Eighty-two healthy volunteers gave informed consent. All eligible were welcome screened age, race, sex equal distribution each. Intervention Respiratory-phase onset duration 11 predetermined associated activities studied. participants’ single-liquid barium swallow examinations studied with simultaneous videofluoroscopy Main Outcome Measures Onset each was digitally recorded analyzed. The phases before after identified. presence, depth, response penetration related pattern. Results Four identified that changed advanced age. correlation analyses revealed 4 clearly distinguishable functional units. Differences apnea offset occurred Conclusion This research provides evidence groupings events, necessary first step toward determining whether abnormal patients dysphagia are health outcome.
