Psychological Adjustment to Cancer: Control Beliefs and Coping in Adult Cancer Patients

摘要: Appraisals of control, the use problem- andemotion-focused coping strategies, and symptoms ofanxiety/depression were assessed in a sample 83 adultcancer patients (mean age 41.6 years) on average 10 weeks after their diagnosis.Anxiety/depression related to patients'ratings problem-focused coping, but notto perceived control or emotion-focused simplecorrelations. In hierarchical multiple-regression analyses,problem-focused was associated with lowersymptoms anxiety/depression emotion-focusedcoping higher symptoms. The interaction ofproblem-focused significantpredictor lower anxiety/depression. Thispattern found for patients' not external judges'ratings intentions. did notpredict 4 months later,after controlling initial anxiety/depressionsymptoms. Implications adaptive cancerare highlighted.
