摘要: Abstract Purpose: To examine whether dietary supplementation with fish oil rich in very long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids might reduce frequency and severity of migraines adolescents. Methods: Twenty-seven adolescents suffering from frequent for at least 1 year (mean 4 ± years since migraine onset) participated a randomized, double-blind, cross-over study consisting 2 months oil, 1-month washout period, placebo (olive oil). Participants self-assessed duration headache episodes (7-point faces 10-point visual analog pain scales, 5-point rating scale) throughout the study. At end every 2-month treatment participants rated effectiveness on 7-point Likert scale (1,"not effective, not worthwhile"; 4,"moderately moderately 7, "totally totally worthwhile"). A score ≥ was considered as improvement. Results: Twenty-three (16 girls, 7 boys, 18 Whites, 3 Hispanics, African-American, Cape Verdean, mean age 15 years) completed Compared headaches before (31 episodes/2 months), there significant ( p = .01) during oil) (3.5 0.4, .03), compared (5.0 0.3) no difference between treatments. Patients' ratings treatments revealed that 87% experienced reduction frequency, 74% duration, 83% 78% who 70% 65% NS). About 91% stated they would recommend to friends or relatives vs. Conclusions: Patients similar olive oil. Although treatments, marked improvement baseline by patients suggests effect should be dismissed simply effect. In fact, results this preliminary suggest both may beneficial recurrent Further studies are warranted compare each these other interventions.
