A bifunctional auxiliary electrode for safe lithium metal batteries

摘要: Increasing demands for performance beyond the limit of current lithium ion batteries higher energy densities have rejuvenated research using metal as an anode. However, commercial implementation has still been hampered due to safety issues. Herein, we introduce a rechargeable battery system with auxiliary electrode that can detect potential signs internal short-circuit and simultaneously prevent cell failure by inhibiting further dendritic growth metal. Based on this working principle, provide guidelines design demonstrate it act both sensor scavenger. Finally, show our in-house designed cell, flexible self-standing electrode, effectively alert danger short circuit in real-time without additional dendrite growth. We expect finding will open up unexplored opportunities utilizing various chemistries safe batteries.
