摘要: The reduction in strength of porous Vycor glass caused by adsorption water vapor has been related to the lowering surface free energy, which obtained from measurements dimensional changes. Deviations this simple relationship have explained capillary condensation, causes a negative pressure under concave menisci completely filled pores. It shown that Griffith equation accounts quantitatively for observed weakening effect if is taken into account. data permit an estimate γ0=700∓100 erg/cm2 energy vacuum. At complete saturation with reduced ∼200 erg/cm2. adsorbates are not freely mobile on do cause expansion glass, although they reduce strength. significance result discussed.
