Safe and Normal: Social Influences on Formation of Attitudes Toward Bicycling

摘要: Many daily trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, but even communities with extensive bike infrastructure, most of these short-distance accomplished by automobile. Previous research has shown that cognitive and attitudinal factors affect transportation mode choice, when infrastructure enables bicycling as a feasible option. This study uses qualitative methods to explore connection between social influences over life-course current attitudes behaviors toward step understanding how towards formed. Fifty-four residents Davis, California, ages 25 65 responded self-administered questionnaire open-ended interview questions about their experiences throughout life. Frequent mentions were made both positive negative bicycling-related involved interactions peers, family wider community.
