摘要: Brood desertion involves a series of interactions between the members pair. This process is likely to be based on either member’s perception other’s propensity desert. We manipulated this in males by experimentally increasing female body mass rock sparrow (Petronia petronia), species which females can desert their first brood before nestlings from leave nest. predicted that male would or stay even if implied risk caring for alone. found mated loaded did not but stayed and significantly increased courtship rate mate guarding. Unexpectedly, they also food provisioning nestlings, though reduce nestling-feeding rate. The increase feeding may explained as way female’s switch her copulate with obtain paternity next brood. Altogether, our results demonstrate being deserted does necessarily induce first, contrary what generally assumed theoretical models. Key words: courtship, fertility cue, guarding, parental care, sexual conflict. [Behav Ecol]
