The Role of Hackers in Countering Surveillance and Promoting Democracy

摘要: Practices related to media technologies and infrastructures (MTI) are an increasingly important part of democratic constellations in general surveillance tactics particular. This article does not seek discuss per se, but instead open a new line inquiry by presenting qualitative research on the Chaos Computer Club (CCC)—one world’s largest Europe’s oldest hacker organizations. Despite longstanding conception hacking as infused with political significance, scope style hackers’ engagement emerging issues remains poorly understood. The rationale this paper is examine CCC civil society organization that counter-acts contemporary assemblages two ways: first, de-constructing existing technology supporting, building, maintaining using alternative enable more secure anonymous communication; second, articulating their expertise MTI wide range audiences, publics actors.
