摘要: Iron is involved in many processes the brain including, myelin generation, mitochondrial function, synthesis of ATP and DNA cycling neurotransmitters. Disruption normal iron homeostasis can result accumulation brain, which turn partake interactions amplify oxidative damage. The development MRI techniques for quantifying has allowed characterisation impact that on cognition neurodegeneration. This review uses a systematic approach to collate evaluate current literature explores relationship between cognition. following databases were searched keeping with predetermined inclusion criterion: Embase Ovid, PubMed PsychInfo (from inception 31st March 2020). included studies assessed study characteristics quality their results extracted summarised. identified 41 human varying design, statistically most consistently reported Caudate nuclei, where increasing correlated poorer memory general cognitive performance adulthood. There also consistent reports correlation increased Hippocampal Thalamic performance, as well as, Putamen Globus Pallidus We conclude there evidence detrimental health, however, more longitudinal will be required fully understand this determine whether occurs primary cause or secondary effect decline.
