摘要: The taxonomic history of the genus Manta has been questionable and convoluted, with having one most extensive generic species synonymies any living cartilaginous fish. Having previously considered a monotypic single recognized species, birostris (Walbaum 1792), new evidence, in form morphological meristic data, confirm that two visually distinct occur, both wide ranging distributions through many world's oceans. stands as widely distributed member genus, while alfredi (Krefft 1868), resurrected herein, represents smaller, more tropical species. Separation is based on morphometric measurements external characters including colouration, dentition, denticle spine morphology, well size at maturity maximum disc width. are sympatric some locations allopatric other regions. A visual key was constructed which highlights conspicuous, diagnostic features using data collected throughout their respective geographical ranges. third, putative referred to here sp. cf. birostris, Atlantic may be from M. but further examination specimens necessary clarify status this variant manta ray. results study will aid differentiation members field preserved specimens. splitting long-standing monospecific help highlight specific threats facing different (e. g. targeted fishing, bycatch fisheries, boat strikes habitat degradation) ultimately assist correct assessment worldwide conservation status.
