Sustaining Development in Mineral Economies: The Resource Curse Thesis

摘要: It is widely believed that natural mineral resources are desirable. However there growing evidence this may not always be the case. Indeed, it seems assets can distort economy to such a degree benefit actually becomes curse. In Sustaining Development in Mineral Economies, Richard Auty highlights these drawbacks and devastating effect they have on developing economies. With reference six ore-exporters (viz. Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Jamaica, Zambia Papua New Guinea) he outlines how things go badly wrong. He particularly stresses need avoid 'Dutch Disease' whereby competitiveness drained out of agriculture manufacturing sectors so long term growth falters.
