摘要: The Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos has as its most urgent duty protection of remaining giant tortoises, which, besides being one interesting and spectacular elements unique fauna, giving islands their name, are at present greater danger extinction than any other native animals. Accurate knowledge status is a prerequisite conservation, this not easy to obtain extremely difficult terrain where surviving tortoises live. This paper summarises very briefly previously available information: main purpose new information which been obtained last year half (time writing, August, 1964), discuss factors threatening continued existence, outline conservation measures have already taken those that planned for future.
