摘要: Scholars studying the effects of political disagreement on participation have advanced competing propositions and mixed evidence to bear whether in discussion networks either mobilizes or demobilizes voters. This article proposes that seeming contradiction is due different conceptual definitions disagreement. Briefly, researchers implicitly defined measured respondents' network as either: (a) competition between points view; (b) opposition a person's view. clarifies distinction two forms disagreement, integrates past insights its turnout tests hypothesized composition voting, nationally representative sample US adults. Results demonstrate differential supportive, oppositional likelihood participation. Implications for future research are discussed conclusion.
