摘要: Predation selects against conspicuous colors in bird eggs and nests, while thermoregulatory constraints select for nest-building behavior that regulates incubation temperatures. We present results suggest a trade-off between nest crypticity thermoregulation of based on selection materials by piping plovers (Charadrius melodus), ground-nesting constructs simple, pebble-lined nests highly vulnerable to predators exposed temperature extremes. Piping selected pebbles were whiter appeared closer color than randomly available pebbles, suggesting crypsis function. However, more contrasting surrounding substrates at greater risk predation, an alternate strategy driving white rocks. Near-infrared reflectance was higher indicating direct physical mechanism heat control through pebble selection. Artificial constructed heated quickly conferred model eggs, causing rapidly from plover pebbles. Thermal models field data indicated temperatures inside may remain up 2–6°C cooler substrates. especially if not incubated, construction serve keep during the unattended laying period. Thus, suggests potential maximizing improve egg microclimate minimizing contrast with substrate conceal predators. Nest employs light-colored, thermally reflective represent evolutionary response birds other egg-laying organisms predation stress.
