On the Social Foundations for Crimmigration: Latino Threat and Support for Expanded Police Powers

摘要: Because of the merging immigration control and criminal justice, or “crimmigration,” state local police increasingly drive interior enforcement through routine policing crime. At same time, growing evidence indicates that is an ethnicity-coded issue allows for veiled expression broader anti-Latino sentiments. Yet little research has examined whether public perceptions either immigrants Latinos influence support policies practices that, in context crimmigration, may significantly shape and, more broadly, contribute to subordination Latinos. The current study addresses this question. draws on data from a recent nationally representative telephone survey employs multivariate regression methods evaluate Latino economic political threat are associated with granting greater latitude stopping, searching, using force against suspects. This provides first at least among Whites, perceived positively expanding investigative powers, especially power stop suspects based only way they look. results suggest by increasing aggressive policing, or, minimum, reducing opposition discriminatory social controls such as profiling, increase attractiveness viability crimmigration “solution” “Latino problem.”
