摘要: Abstract The Hylebos Waterway, in central Puget Sound the state of Washington, is severely contaminated by a variety organic and inorganic contaminants. Studies 1970s had shown that flatfish residing Waterway increased prevalences several types toxicopathic liver disease, including neoplasms. In 1994, studies were initiated to: (i) determine if contaminant source control resulted improvements habitat quality, as determined disease flatfish; (ii) encompass assessment reproductive function (iii) whether to what degree there might be exposure juvenile salmonids which migrate through this waterway. findings show have been no appreciable changes or apparent from site since 1970s. Moreover, female are showing evidence precocious sexual maturation young animals, inhibited gonadal development older fish. results also showed two species salmon sampled being exposed wide range chemical contaminants, levels comparable previously cause impaired growth, immunosuppression, mortality following pathogen exposure. These studies, done provide scientific legal basis for cleaning up restoring degraded habitat, an example how pollutant responses marine organisms (PRIMO) applied societal resource manager needs.
