Constructing "Deservingness": DREAMers and Central American Unaccompanied Children in the National Immigration Debate.

摘要: Utilizing a Latina/o Critical Theory framework (LatCrit), I examine the narratives that emerged within national newsprint media coverage of DREAMers and Central American unaccompanied children. Data included 268 newspaper articles published during periods heightened attention about (96 articles) children (172 articles). A content analysis revealed prevalent contradictory created constructions deservingness, where one group is positively portrayed as deserving U.S. opportunity, other group, negatively undeserving. The shows regardless positive or negative portrayals cast, “deservingness” are employed in these assigned values non-nativeness to both groups justify their continued subordination society.
