摘要: A number of ocean-floor environments in the Eastern Pacific have been investigated with U. S.N. Electronics Laboratory Deep-Sea Camera, Type III. Fourteen ocean stations were occupied from R/V Baird which participated Scripps Institution Oceanography Expedition “Downwind.” Nine successful lowerings to depths excess 4500 m along a track between San Diego, California, and Valparaiso, Chile, yielded photographs scientific interest. Analysis these has revealed that: certain areas sea floor are covered surface concentrations manganese; biological, chemical, physical forces acting continuously form, change, disrupt microrelief character deep pelagic sediments; camera proven useful as tool conduct rapid surveys sediment-water interface for information on distribution geological, chemical phenomena. The rate accumulation sediments is closely related formation manganese nodules account existence widely distributed exposed quantities such free minerals floor.
