Cucurbits, Sanskrit, and the Indo-Aryas 1

摘要: Vedic and early post-Vedic Sanskrit works describe Indo-Aryan life in northern India during 2000–200 B.C. Wild cultivated plants of the Cucurbitaceae played an important role food, medicine, culture; over 300 words describing cucurbits are found texts. These words, their etymological relationships, geographies cucurbit taxa were compared. Results indicate that Indo-Aryas knew only a handful before entering Indian subcontinent from west. They learned at least 11 more species neighbors India, who speakers Dravidian or Munda languages.
